Yesterday, I was browsing my Heads Up SNG results and realised that I achieved a milestone, namely the 500 tournament mark. A good time for stats updated, I thought.
So the scores on the doors are.......insert drumroll here........
Played: 503
ITM%: 55.7%
ROI%: 3.0%
This includes all my heads up SNGs, even the ones I played waaaaay back when I was definitely clueless about the whole HU thingy. I suppose I have to be pleased that I'm positive and that I have a good chance of being a winning player, even if it's a barely winning player.
One of the problems of being a barely winning player with a small ROI is that my winnings are very sensitive to variance. As little as 50 games ago, my winnings were in the red. My HEM EV graph was also in the red so I was definitely going through a bad run. It was scary just how little time it took for the winnings to evaporate. The bad run passed, however, and I'm back in profit.
Another thing that pleased me is that I'm in profit at every buyin I've played from the $2.15s up to the $10.50s.
So, what's my plan going forward?
My plan is to continue to play the $5.25s until I'm up $75-$100 dollars and then perhaps have a proper go at the $10.50s. Of course, I'll carry on with the HU education, namely watching HU videos and reading the 2+2 Heads Up forum. And I'll be putting extra effort into monitoring my emotional state while playing to ensure that I don't tilt away money.

Again, it's been awhile.
After my last post the old Heads Up SNGs results took a turn for the worst. As you can probably see in the wee graph in the left column, after getting to peak profit of $74, I basically lost it all and for a game or two fell back into negative territory.
A 15 buyin downswing is not nice, I can tell you. Some of the suckouts were gross, leading me to lose my self-control and I tilted off some more when I really should have just closed down and stepped back.
A couple of days away from the virtual felt helped loads and allowed to me to review and take stock. For a while, I dropped down to the $2.20s but it was too demoralising and I moved back to the $5.25s.
Here's what I learned during my little review:-
-Work out what sort of opponent you are up against and act accordingly. There is no point playing your default style if it's not the best way to beat this particular opponent.
-If you've lost three in row - stop. You're probably not in the correct frame of mind to win. Stop and review the hand histories of those defeats.
-Monitor your tilt level. If you've had a beat take a deep breath. Even if you're in the lead in the match, make sure you're not getting too aggressive in trying to finish your opponent. Think properly about your move.
-Big bets on the river are usually not bluffs!
Results have been a whole lot better since and I'm only a couple of wins away from getting back into profit at the $5.25s.

I'm getting the hang of this heads-up lark now.
Over the weekend, I managed to recoup the losses I made when I first ventured into the $5 Heads Up SNGs. Now, after 90 games (which isn't a lot really), I'm $7.50 in profit with an ROI on 1.6%.
Yeah, yeah, very small sample size, yada yada yada but I'm very happy with the way I've been playing recently. My patience has improved, my tilt control is better (but not perfect) and I'm adapting better to my opponents. I'm still prone to occasional lapse, like in the first hand of one SNG, I went busto with a turned two pair against my opponent's flopped straight, despite him telling me via his repeated min-raises that he had a monster.
Next target:- Get my overall Sharkscope profits back into positive territory. Only eleven dollars to go.

It's been a while but I've been busy. Following on from my previous post, I did indeed make GoldStar in the rather spiffy PokerStars promotion. And it paid immediate dividends too. I qualified for one of the weekly VIP tournaments and finished 8th out of five thousand or so opponents. This added $350 or so to my account which is always nice.
I then hardly played a hand for two months.
Other stuff got in the way. Mainly upgrading my Dumbarton FC wesbite, On The Rocks to work with Joomla 1.5. I had migrated my previous lovingly hand-crafted database code into Joomla 1.0.x a few years ago. And then ignored it. Joomla 1.0.x has now been retired so it was time that I moved it up to Joomla 1.5. Unfortunately, Joomla 1.5 is significantly different from its predecessor and it took me a while to rewrite the code. But, as of Sunday evening, the new version of OTR is up and running. I've still got tonnes of stuff to fix and add but it's a start.
Now that that is out the way and the site I build for my mum is up and running, I've been able to get some more poker in.
My adventures in the world of heads up SNGs continue. I've stepped up the $5s again and I'm playing much better although I've still got a way to go before I recoup my earlier disastrous time at the $5s.
ROI percentage is around -14%, much better than the -40% of a couple of months ago.
