My copy of "Kill Phil" arrived yesterday and as I wasn't particularily motivated to do any bonus whoring I thought I'd read some of the book and give it a try.
So, I read the Rookie technique, which is absurdly simple, and signed up for a $1 NL MTT on Stars. There were about 1000 entrants and the top 248 placed in the money.
I didn't get many hands early doors so I was just sitting tight for the first few levels. Then a few hands came my way. I had AKs in EP and raised all in. Everyone folded. "Oh well," I thought. A couple of hands later I had A10o in the BB and was able to see a flop. The flop came A high and I checked. There was a bet in late position and I reraised all-in over the top. Another pot to me.
This continued for another couple of levels and I was able to keep in the top half of the field. I was also starting to read the Basic technique while waiting. There a couple of hands that the Basic technique would have had all-in with but I just didn't fancy doing that with a pair of 88s and chickened out.
Good hands were still scarce and I was getting into the low end of a medium stack. Then I got AKo in UTG+1. UTG called the BB and I reraised all-in. Unfortunately he had JJ and hit his set on the turn and I was out. But I finished 349 which is my best ever result in a NL tournie and was only a hundred or so places off the money.
I'll definitely being reading more of this book.
