I've been suffering a little bit in the heads up SNGs. Usual reasons, some of the poor play, some underserved suckouts. Like KK vs 33, 33 hits a runner runner straight, AK vs AT, another runner runner straight, AA vs Q9, one pair on flop, hits his second on the turn. You know, just the usual. My ROI has dropped to just over 6% which is probably OK but at the $2.20 level, it really should be more.
I've have a change in focus this week due to PokerStars UK-specific VIP Club offer. For the month of May, PokerStars have slashed the requirements for the VIP Club levels meaning that I only need 250 points to get SilverStar and only 500 points to get GoldStar. The SilverStar threshold was almost achieved soley on the HU SNGs and this week I decided that I may as well put in a bit of effort and get through the SilverStar barrier and get the GoldStar status. To do this, I've switched back to limit holdem and have been playing $1/$2 6 max (although I'm probably not adequately bankrolled for this limit just now). It's been going quite well. There are still fish-a-plenty who still insist of betting the flop, turn and river with absolute air. You know, I really should think about switching back to limit.
Anyhoo, 67 points to achieve before the end of the month and I'll be GoldStar until August.

I broke through the $60 winnings barrier and moved up to the $5 regular HU SNGs. It did not go well.
Played 21, ROI -45.6, ITM 28.6%
Although it's not a bankroll breaker for me as I have plenty online to play the $5s, I decided to keep within my self-imposed limits and move back down to the $2.20s as it's pretty obvious that I some serious holes to plug.

The Heads-Up SNGs continue to go well. I'm still playing the $2.20s as I haven't quite got the $60 winnings target I had set myself before I can move up to the $5s.
Yesterday, I did reach a small milestone - my overall Sharkscope stats are in profit. Woo Hoo.
Here are the stats:- Played: 135 Won: $55 ROI: 18.5% ITM: 65.2%

Heading over to heads up. |

It's been a while since my last post.
I'm still here, still playing poker when I can. There's been a change of focus as well from 9 man SNGs to Heads Up SNGS.
This came about because I felt I was weak when heads up in regular SNGs. I started watching PrimordialAA's videos on the SNG Academy before it closed. They are some of the best videos I have watched. His teaching style is so relaxed yet so informative. Unfortunately, he has moved to HUSNG.com which is rather expensive for my taste.
Anyway, inspired by PrimordialAA's teachings, I started playing the $2.20 heads up SNGs on Stars and it's going pretty well. I haven't played that many, around 60 or so, but my ROI is 32%, winning 72% of the time. Not bad.
One of the good things about heads up is that bankroll requirements are a lot lower with a comfortable level around 30 buyins. With that in mind, I've got a set of guidelines for moving up and down the various stakes. Only another $12 to win until I move up to the $5s.

It's all gone pretty pearshaped. I've just had a sequence of ten tournies without a cash. It's wiped out all of my Sharkscope profit which is not very nice. Reviewing the games, a few were bad moves by me but quite a few were bad moves by opponents and a few were just being unlucky. Oh well. I'll keep on grinding. |

I've added a wee graph in the left column that will display my current SNG Winnings graph from Top Shark purveyors of quality poker software. Top Shark hasn't been around as long as Sharkscope but it hasn't missed any of my recent tournaments. I've played a couple of SNGs since my last post and I've played them much better, getting a first and second. |

See what a bit of confidence does? |

It totally messes with your game, that's what. I've been having a bit of a 'mare since my last post. Eight consecutive games without placing wasn't very good. And it wasn't variance, it was bad play. Reviewing the hand histories confirmed that I arsed up in nearly every single one. After that reality check, results improved a bit. I'm down to $18 profit at the $6.50 Turbos, an ROI of 5%. |

Things are going swimmingly |

Indeed they are. My current ROI is 28.2% and I'm up $109 for the year. OK, it's not a lot of actual money but I haven't played that many tourneys. I even managed to win a $5 regular SNG last night that I signed up for by mistake! My Sharkscope winnings are at $68 which I'm pleased with seeing as I only got the figure above zero about 10 days ago.
I've got a new target to replace the "get Sharkscope winnings positive" target and that is to get my Sharkscope "Average ROI" above zero. It's current at -6%. I'm not quite sure what sort of timescale to set for this one so I'll make the end date notionally the end of the year. The SNG education is continuing. The live coaching sessions on PokerStrategy have been the most benificial recently. Watching Chenny8888 and Unam handling bad beats with grace has been an invaluable lesson and has made me a much calmer person at the virtual tables. As Chenny8888 says, "Shit happens". You're always going to have people suck out on you. Accept it and move on the next hand. |

Woo Hoo! Sharkscope Stats are in the Black |

Well, it's only February and I have achieved my solitary concrete poker goal for 2009. As of 6.50pm today Sharkscope has me as being $4 in profit. So I'm hanging up my poker gloves. I've achieved all that I wanted to in poker. Nobody can take that away from me. Best to retire while at the top of one's game.
Only kidding! It is quite satisfying though, knowing that you have improved and that this is starting to show through in the results. Since my last post, I've switched from the $5.50 regular 9 mans to the $6.50 turbos. I probably should have done this a while ago but it I foolishly believed that I had a bigger edge with the regular format. What tosh. With turbos, you get into the push/fold stage faster and this is better for a player like me who has got a reasonably good knowledge of ICM and push/fold strategy. Since the switch my ROI is 13%, although my sample size is exceptionally small. I've even managed to win a few. I've managing to keep up with my other targets too. Lots of videos are being watched, live coachings are being attended and I've been reviewing my hands and taking quizzes. Long may this continue. |

It's been quiet couple of weeks on the poker front, mainly because at this time of year, I find myself knee deep in doing my other half's tax return.
This would go a whole lot smoother if my other half actually updated her accounts on a monthly basis....but she doesn't. So January becomes an ordeal with me trying to make sense of her spreadsheets, asking awkward questions about transactions over a year ago to which she doesn't know the answers to. Next year, it's going to be different. Mind you, I've been saying that for the last 5 years.
Getting back to poker, I've not played that much since the last posting. I did watch a couple of PrimordialAA's HU SNG videos on The SNG Academy and I followed it up by playing a few low buyin tournies. So far, it's played 3 - won 3. Apart from that I've played a grand total of two regular SNGs. One was a $5.50 regular on Stars in which I bubbled, the other a $1 turbo on Party which I got second with my usual heads up luck - all in with KQs against opponents QJ. He makes a straight on the river. Sharkscope now track SNGs on Party and that one was the first to make it into the database. I've got an ROI of 140%!
Now, although I haven't been playing, I have been keeping up with the learning. I've been attending the coaching sessions on PokerStrategy with Chenny888 and Unam and I've been watching the videos on The SNG Academy. But I do need to do some SNG ICM quizzes before the end of the month to keep up with my 2009 targets.
